i’ve spent the better part of my life preparing for the leap
the next jump, the next conquest, the next plunge into the deep
and after many falls from the precipice, and the sinking reality of starting anew
it dawned upon me not long ago - i know now what i must do
for life, you see, is a series of small steps, trudging along each day
so, when we make mistakes and go awry, we have the chance to find our way
mine has always been wandering, it appears my heart is so inclined
my path, from what i could tell, was murky and ill-defined
but i stomped upon it, sometimes slowing, but never standing still
of wretched mornings and bitter dawns i’ve surely had my fill
i see it clearly now, through tribulation and defeat, that i have been called to act
from this very moment, i’ve sealed my destiny with a simple sort of pact
that each step will be steeped in purpose, for there is nary time to waste
the regret of turning back spurs my spirit on with even grander haste
let my words traverse the globe, in ways my body never could
and where i find sodden wickedness, i shall strive to sow the land with good
when the time comes to take the next step, it won’t be so far away
one foot in front, eyes set to the horizon, doubts all cast astray
