Trump loves to go on the offensive against those he perceives as enemies. In fact, President Trump seems to relish it even more, utilizing his power as America’s foremost executive to terrorize them in increasingly inventive ways. Until recently, this strategy has proven effective. Yet, pressure appears to be mounting, and even his faithful supporters are beginning to push back.

It appears that, of all of the enemies that Donald Trump has had over the years, from Obama and Hillary Clinton to Rosie O’Donnell and Rihanna, he has become his own worst enemy. His ceaseless lies and disdain for anyone who dares to challenge him have come back to haunt him, and the president is running out of places to hide, and people to blame.

Self-Induced Outrage

One of the flagship promises of Trump’s presidential campaigns over the years has been the uncovering and assault on the ‘Deep State,’ the shadowy group of individuals who are purportedly pulling the strings in Washington, according to MAGA conspiracy theorists. Chief among these conspiracies was the one surrounding the alleged suicide of notorious child sex trafficker and close, personal friend of Trump, Jeffrey Epstein. In fact, when asked about the Epstein case during his confirmation hearing as Director of the FBI, Patel said, ‘Child sex trafficking has no place in the United States of America…I will do everything, if confirmed as FBI Director, to make sure the American public knows the full weight of what happened in the past.’ This call was further echoed by the far-right conspiracy theorist and now Deputy FBI Director, Dan Bongino, who was so infuriated by recent developments in the Epstein saga that he failed to show up for work the next day amid rumors that he was considering resigning.

Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has consistently found herself at the center of this brewing scandal, has only fanned the flames with a barrage of contradictory claims and statements since Trump took office in January. For instance, Bondi stated in an interview with a news network that the files were ‘on her desk’ and ready to be reviewed, and even went so far as to stage a release of the documents with a cohort of fellow far-right MAGA influencers, who gleefully held up binders that allegedly contained the declassified files. However, in recent weeks, Bondi and Patel have both gone on the record to state that the evidence proved that Epstein truly did commit suicide, and that no further documentation would be released on the case, sending expectant MAGA supporters into a spiral.

Trump, who racked up more than 30,000 false claims in his first Presidency alone, seems to be spiraling, too. In fact, in a recent interview during a meeting with his cabinet, Trump became irate after being asked about the Epstein files by a reporter, shouting, ‘Are people still talking about this creep? That is unbelievable!’ However, unlike nearly every other time that Trump has peddled falsehoods to his base, this one appears different - his supporters aren’t so keen to give up on finding the truth amidst the carnage.

With Trump’s behavior strongly indicative of a guilty conscience and a surprisingly anti-climactic declaration by the Justice Department that the case would be closed without any new evidence, longtime supporters of the President, including high-ranking government officials, are beginning to turn on him. From far-right voices, like known White Supremacist and Neo-Nazi Nick Fuentes, to sitting Senator Josh Hawley, it appears that MAGA loyalists aren’t ready to swallow the falsehoods that the President and his appointees are feeding them. Furthermore, the mishandling of this case has raised even more suspicion - how can we trust what the Justice Department chooses to release following this failed attempt at a coverup? The people want answers that Trump is unwilling, or unable, to provide.

After relying on his signature move of declaring allegations against him a ‘hoax,’ Trump went on a tirade of his own, declaring his MAGA supporters ‘weaklings’ for questioning the validity of the DOJ’s determination on the Epstein case. Yet, regardless of what he says and the number of diversions that he employs, the evidence against Trump is irrefutable.

Trump was not only an acquaintance of Epstein, but was also his neighbor in Palm Beach, and named his ‘closest friend’ by Epstein himself in an interview with journalist Michael Wolff. Beyond that, Trump’s name was on flight logs for Epstein’s private jet, and the internet is littered with photos of Trump alongside him and Ghislaine Maxwell, Esptein’s longtime accomplice and fellow sex criminal. Now, former Epstein attorney Alan Dershowitz has called on Maxwell to be granted immunity in order for her to testify in front of Congress, noting that she ‘knows everything.’

Without his sycophantic core supporters behind him, and the demand for transparency that the Trump White House is incapable of providing, the president has given the people every reason to doubt anything that is henceforth released regarding this case, and they’re not ready to move on just yet. In classic, Trump fashion, rather than fortify his defensive, he has chosen to attack his rivals, both old and new.

The Trump Playbook

A recent exposè by The Wall Street Journal revealed that Trump and Epstein were so close that he actually sent the deceased sexual predator a handwritten birthday card, complete with a ‘bawdy’ sketch of a nude woman. Trump immediately punched back, issuing a $10 billion lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch and those involved in the Journal’s article.

This is far from the first time that Trump has accused media companies of libel and defamation. In fact, Paramount, the parent company of CBS, recently settled a lawsuit filed by Trump for allegedly manipulating an interview with then-Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, claiming that the network had edited the content to strengthen her campaign in the 2024 election. Only 2 weeks later, CBS announced that it would be canceling The Colbert Show, its most-popular late night show, which had been nominated for an Emmy just one day prior. The message was clear - if you criticize Trump, he will wield his power against you.

Unfortunately for Trump, this time feels different. When you build a campaign centered around exposing the corrupt, it is hard to ask those who supported you to ignore your involvement in it. From Q-Anon to COVID vaccines, MAGA supporters have consistently latched onto conspiracy theories peddled by the President and those around him. Now, the Epstein Files have taken center stage, and it’s going to take a lot more than a lawsuit to make them go away.

Trump seemingly knows this, and is doing everything in his power to divert the public’s attention. Weaponizing Tulsi Gabbard and the National Intelligence apparatus in a case that claims Obama attempted to stage a coup against him. Threatening to cancel a stadium deal with an NFL team over changing their name. How about regaling the crowd with the lurid tale of the time your uncle taught the infamous Unabomber? For Trump, there is no limit to the depths of his fantastical falsehoods.

MAGA has held on through racist rants, felonious affairs, a failed coup, and more, all while holding their dear leader in highest regard. Yet, even they maintain that, in the case of the Deep State, the conspirators don’t fall far from the conspiracy.
